Dragon Soul Press had the chance to interview Sandy R. Stuckless, an author featured in DSP’s Dragon Flight and A Winter Kiss.
- Introduce yourself.
My name is Sandy R. Stuckless, Canadian writer of science fiction and fantasy. I live in the Greater Toronto Area with my wife and kids. We have a small house and three cats. I love being outdoors, whether it’s camping, hiking, or things like that. - What prompted you to begin writing?
I was a voracious reader as a kid, and I’ve always had stories bouncing around in my head. I just decided to start writing them down. - Do you have a favorite story or poem you’ve written? What’s it about?
Probably my first short story Redemption’s Beacon, about a recovering alcoholic and a haunted lighthouse. - How many projects do you have planned over the next few years? Tell us about one.
I’m currently working on book 2 of my scifi thriller series ‘Janik Brynn Chronicles’, but I’m really excited about this married monster hunter series I’m working on. It’s about a married couple who work for a secret society of paladins hunting down and eliminating various monsters. The first book is set in Bucharest and involves Dracula.
I can’t wait to see those books in print. - What is your writing process like?
I’m a long-hand writer who under writes a lot. Much of my earlier drafts are dialog heavy and it usually takes several passes to get all the detail and worldbuilding in. I’m trying to hone that skill a little bit to do it faster, but like everything else writing-related, it’s a process. - Where do you draw inspiration from?
Everywhere, really. Pictures, song lyrics, a line of text on social media. Anything can spark a story idea. It’s what happens after that’s magic. - Who is your favorite author / what is your favorite book?
Right now, it’s probably Brandon Sanderson, or Jim Butcher. I discovered the Dresden Files books late and am really enjoying them. Also, Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid series on audiobook is amazing. Highly recommend. - What is one goal you have for your writing future?
It’s always been a dream to see one of my books on the shelf of a brick-and-mortar bookstore, so I’m working toward that. I’d also like to earn enough to take my wife on a nice European vacation. She works hard and deserves a nice holiday. - What do you hope readers enjoy most from your work?
I just hope they enjoy the story. I’m a big believer in escapism, and if someone reads one of my pieces and can forget their problems for a little while, I’ve done my job. That’s all I can really expect. - Where can readers learn more about you?
