Author interview with Geneviève Lowe

Dragon Soul Press had the opportunity to interview Geneviève Lowe, an author featured in The Fear Doctor: Volume One anthology.

  1. Introduce yourself.
    • My name is Genevieve Lowe and I am a story-telling, model-crafting, maker of things!
Whenever possible, I speak and write words for a living. I have worked as a content writer (for
the Idle Man and Alexie.co) and as an actor, performing the works of Oscar Wilde, Noël
Coward, Lorca, Austen, and Shakespeare. I have also provided voice over work for the National
Space Centre and performed in a one woman play. With my husband, I write, direct and
produce films through our production company: ‘Something Quirky.’ In my spare time, I love to
Needle felt and sometimes sell my creations online.
  2. What prompted you to begin writing?
    • Probably my love of performing. I absolutely loved doing an annual production with my dance
school as a child and that led me to writing my own scripts for fun. As I became more serious
about acting, I stopped thinking of myself as a writer. It wasn’t until the Covid lockdown hit that
I discovered it was still possible to write for fun and found joy working on micro-fictions and a
      screenplay.
  3. Do you have a favorite story or poem you’ve written? What’s it about?
    • I am very self-critical and sometimes I can’t even read my own work back! I don’t really have a
favourite, but if I had to pick, it would likely be the first drabble I wrote about God’s pearly
      electric gates failing.
  4. How many projects do you have planned over the next few years? Tell us about one.
    • My focus at the moment is to produce some more short films. I really want to write and create
a stop-motion short film and I’m currently in pre-production on my second short film, ‘Passing
      Through.’
  5. What is your writing process like?
    • My writing process is quite chaotic. I tend to vomit draft all sorts of nonsense and then go back
and rein everything in. I hate starting at the beginning, so I’ll often start somewhere in the
middle and work my way outwards.
  6. Where do you draw inspiration from?
    • I like strange and quirky things – anything that has a weird tone or leaves you scratching your
head. For some reason I am quite often drawn to writing something a little dark and sinister,
which is the opposite of my personality – my co-workers and friends know me as being very
      bright and bubbly!
  7. Who is your favorite author / what is your favorite book?
    • My favourite book is ‘Tell the Wolves I’m Home,’ by Carol Rifka Brunt. I think it is beautifully
written, deals with emotions in an almost poetic way, and the characters are fully formed and
      believable.
  8. What is one goal you have for your writing future?
    • It would be such a huge accomplishment to write a novel – that’s definitely on my bucket list. I’d also really like to work on a screenplay for a stop-motion short film.
  9. What do you hope readers enjoy most from your work?
    • I like to write with a bit of ambiguity so I hope that readers enjoy something a little more
obscure and reaching their own conclusions.
  10. Where can readers learn more about you?
    • I share most of my news and creative work on my Instagram page. The Fear Doctor will be the first publication my drabbles have featured in. I’m really looking forward to having my work published with DSP and am so grateful for the opportunity to share my work!
