Author interview with Robert J. Foster

Dragon Soul Press took the chance to interview Robert J. Foster!

  1. Introduce yourself.
    • Robert J. Foster. I’m a former teacher who has thought of becoming a writer for decades. I published my first novel, Morgan’s Mount, in 2023. I’m a nature lover and can often be found, or not found, wandering in the woods. It’s where most of my story ideas come from. I’m from New Hampshire but have been living in Maine for 7 years. I’ve lived in four countries and traveled to many more. My travels and experiences like to slip into my stories at opportune moments.
  2. What prompted you to begin writing?
    • My brother, author John C. Foster. My love of reading and stories as well.
  3. Do you have a favorite story or poem you’ve written? What’s it about?
    • Morgan’s Mount. It’s my first novel. It’s a ghost story about a contract killer hired for an impossible job. He must go to a ruined Welsh castle and kill the man inside. Upon arriving at the castle, he learns that the man he’s been hired to kill is the ghost of a serial killer. He’s been hired to kill a man who’s already dead and he has no idea how to do the job.
  4. How many projects do you have planned over the next few years? Tell us about one.
    • I have several stories planned. My first novella, Crag Island, releases July 18, 2024. It’s the first in a series. Horror and fantasy combine in an island prison in which all the inmates are supernatural beings. When there’s a jailbreak, the prison guards must face their worst nightmare and try to quell the inmates’ rebellion.
  5. What is your writing process like?
    • I write in the evenings, but I plan out the stories in my mind when I’m at work. I take a few notes and write vague outlines, so I won’t forget the important bits, but I’m definitely a pantser. I feel that I do my best writing when I’m unorganized and free to take the story in any direction it wants to go. I’m often guided by the personalities of my characters.
  6. Where do you draw inspiration from?
    • Nature. Books. Experience. Movies. Sometimes, inspiration comes from mundane places, like TV commercials or cracks in the sidewalk. It’s all over the place.
  7. Who is your favorite author / what is your favorite book?
    • I’m not good at choosing favorites, but, as someone who rarely rereads books, I’ve read. American Gods, by Neil Gaiman., four times.
  8. What is one goal you have for your writing future?
    • I want to publish a series.
  9. What do you hope readers enjoy most from your work?
    • I hope readers will enjoy my mix of silliness and horror. I think humor complements horror well.
  10. Where can readers learn more about you?
