Dragon Soul Press took a moment to interview Devin James Leonard, an author featured in the Apocalypse anthology!

- What prompted you to begin writing?
- On my 12th birthday, my parents gifted me a camcorder and, as an aspiring actor/filmmaker, I made videos with family and friends. With that came the task of coming up with original stories to shoot. That was when writing came into my life, and I found it to be the most fun and fulfilling. I lost my love for acting when I started taking writing seriously roughly ten years ago.
- How many projects do you have planned over the next few years? Tell us about one.
- Apart from my focus on short stories, I have completed seven novels I plan to finish editing. The first novel I ever wrote is a horror-comedy called Heartworm, where alien parasites invade a small town during a ten-year high school reunion. The mind-altering creatures serve as a metaphor for identity, addiction, depression, relationships, and adulthood.
- What is your writing process like?
- Time typically flies when I’m writing, so I wake up extra early before going to work to put some words on the page.
- Where do you draw inspiration from?
- From my desire to quit my day job.
- Who is your favorite author / what is your favorite book?
- Stephen King and Elmore Leonard are in a tight competition, but since I’m partial to Elmore’s last name, I’m siding with The Dickens of Detroit. If I had to choose a favorite book, it would have to be John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, since I’ve read it more times than any other.
- What is one goal you have for your writing future?
- To continue surprising myself.
- What do you hope readers enjoy most from your work?
- I just hope they crack a smile at least once.
- Where can readers learn more about you?
- You can find me on Instagram but no promises you’ll learn anything other than I’m also an artist and I rarely ever have a shirt on.
