Dragon Soul Press had the chance to sit down to interview Annie Snow, an author featured in Dragons and Heroes, The Hunt, Fairy Rites, Magick and Malice, and Be Mine!
1) Introduce yourself!
Hi there! My name is Annie Snow, and I’m a queer and neurodivergent romance and romantasy author. I live in the UK with my partner and our dog, and when I’m not writing I enjoy photography and travel.
2) I honestly can’t remember a time I was ever not writing! I’d always had a hazy daydream about being an author, and having stories published, and one day something clicked in my mind that no one was going to come along and just offer me the space and time to write professionally. I realised if I wanted that, I would have to be my own advocate, and that spurred me to take my own writing seriously and begin this journey.
3) How many projects do you have planned over the next few years? Tell us about one.
I definitely have a few short story ideas currently in mind, including a sapphic dark academia / magical academy idea. In terms of longer works, I have a couple of projects I’m contemplating! One of the ideas I’m excited about is around magical creatures hiding in plain sight in modern society, using their magical abilities to thrive in human jobs that play to those strengths. Let’s just say, what happens when a dragon, a notoriously solo species, meets another of his kind on the firefighting crew he’s part of? Hint: sparks will fly!!
4) What is your writing process like?
I used to be a complete no-plan-whatsoever writer, and often wondered why I found it so hard to finish things! I’ve since learned the beauty of just-enough planning, where I plot out the main characters and their goals, and a high level plan of the events in my arc. From there I admit I write very chaotically! I’ll write scenes in whatever order I’m inspired to, and then knit it all together at the end.
5) Where do you draw inspiration from?
So many places! I read a LOT, and am constantly inspired by the many incredible writers out there, especially those with diverse backgrounds writing diverse characters. I’m also a visual creative thinker, so I often find inspiration through things like Instagram or Pinterest, where I can get sparks of ideas from photos or moodboards. Whenever I’m stuck for inspiration or have writer’s block, I find walking
in nature is an incredible source of inspiration and a great way to unblock the creative mind.
6) Who is your favourite author / what is your favourite book?
This is always such a hard question to answer! In terms of queer fantasy romance, I love the works of Ben Alderson, Seth Haddon and FT Lukens – I loved So This is Ever After! I love a good hockey romance, and Emily Rath is a standout in that subgenre. I also really liked My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine – very much looking forward to her next vampire romcom!
7) What is one goal you have for your writing future?
I would love to continue writing in the fantasy romance subgenre, and start to connect more with readers of romantasy and paranormal romance. I used to be a big part of certain fanfic spaces, and I really loved the camaraderie and support between the writers and readers in those fandoms. I’d relish the opportunity to find some of that with my own writing.
8) What do you hope readers enjoy most from your work?
I love the art of character design, and I always strive to make my characters interesting and empathetic, even in short stories where we might not spend that much time with them. I really hope readers enjoy that characterisation and maybe even see something of themselves in them.
9) Where can readers learn more about you?
